Athens is both the epicentre of the ancient world and the birthplace of modern civilisation. While its history stretches back thousands of years, it’s possible to get to grips with the city in a single day, which is great news for anyone passing through on a Mediterranean cruise.
The Croatian city of Dubrovnik has a long and cultured history. These days, the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visiting this stunning location is like taking a stroll through the pages of the world’s most picturesque history book.
Straddling the geographical boundary between Europe and Asia, the Turkish capital, Istanbul can make a pretty strong claim to being the centre of the universe, and for thousands of years.
Gibraltar may not get the most glamorous or reputations in comparison with others on this list but, it is on many Mediterranean itineraries and this list for a reason.
